Tabby and the Fishes

The day was bleak

but her heart was bright,

for the lake was clear

and the fishes that resided below

were tempting in their fear

of her, the mighty tabby

who would bring about their demise.

But the fishes had faith

for they knew,

that the lake in which they resided

was known to bring about the end

of many a greedy tabby.

And so they waited

and were rewarded.

Eight of her lives were used

but her hunger never sated.

She first dipped a whisker

and second a claw

her tail held proudly behind her.

She stretched in vain to claim her prize

and the fishes cheered

as she tumbled in.

The day was bright,

but his heart was bleak

for the lake was clear

and the fishes that resided below

had just taken his precious tabby’s ninth life.

I came across this article from Hyperallergic, and was inspired by Thomas Gray’s poem mentioned in the beginning.
